Why do we refuse to learn

Posted on April 8, 2024April 8, 2024 By Chris Whittemore No Comments on Why do we refuse to learn

There are many instances where we are presented with the opportunity to learn from the past, learn from others, and make things better for ourselves without having to suffer and repeat the same mistakes as others. Even from a young age we are raised and taught not to do certain things to avoid pain, injury, or death.

Although we learn the listens at such a young age, as we get older and progress through different careers, different points of the military, or navigating through different times in life, we still find a way to ignore all the previous life lessons and think we are going to be different. Why do we do this to ourselves? There are so many books, stories from others, and songs written to help us avoid these pitfalls.

Is it a super man syndrome? Do we foolishly feel that we are invincible? I think that it is a combination of all of this.  We all feel that “this won’t happen to me” and try and push through and try and hide the pain from whatever we are dealing with.  Another big mistake is the feeling of “I am the only one who is going through this” or worse, “what I went through is not as bad as someone else.”

I think is the one thing that gets us in the most trouble.  Trying to compare our stories to someone else is a recipe for disaster.  We all have either done it ourselves or know people who have fallen into this trap. The harsh reality is that we all have our own experiences, and all have done, been through, or have our own feelings as it relates to what we have gone through.  If we would just accept this for the truth, think about how happy we could be without going through so much turmoil.

If would stop comparing ourselves to others, learning from other’s experiences, and sharing our successes and how we have overcome certain challenges, think of the amount of people we could help and the amount of people that we could inspire to follow in suite.  Things do not change when we keep repeating the same pitfalls. Be the change you want to see and live your best life.  You would be amazed in how much happier you will be and how much happiness can be contagious to others.
